Historic Rural House Renovation
- Fethard, Co. Tipperary -
This garden forms part of a beautiful old country property where the owner has carefully renovated a 100-year-old house, while adding a contemporary extension to meet the needs of modern living.
My aim was to create a garden that would sit comfortably between these two elements, while retaining the character and charm of the original property.
The garden is centred around a generous lawn, with the patio and house overlooking it from behind a low stone wall. I designed wide, informal planting borders along the edges, filled with a colourful mix of shrubs and flowering perennials to create a relaxed, traditional country-garden feel.
Two classical urns on stone pedestals form a focal point at the centre of the lawn, drawing the eye through the garden and creating a visual stop. At the far end, a Lutyens-style bench provides a quiet place to sit and enjoy a different view back towards the garden and house.
A mature evergreen yew hedge encloses the garden and gives the space a strong sense of privacy and enclosure, creating what feels like a garden room.
The result is a garden that feels established, generous and connected to the character of the old country house, while still working naturally alongside its contemporary extension.
